As the night deepened, Kristen, McCrea, and Paula found a spot on the fringes of the camp to make camp. While Kristen and Paula spread out their sleeping bags, McCrea ventured out to find firewood and started a small fire for them to boil the water they’d collected from a pond along the trail from Turkey Mountain.

As Kristen, McCrea, and Paula huddled around the crackling campfire, the flickering flames cast shadows over their faces. They listened to the subtle chorus of the night—the distant whispers of the wind, the gentle hum of the Arkansas River, and the muted murmurs of the camp.

“We’ve seen so many faces today,” Paula began, her voice low and thoughtful. “Each with their own stories of hardship, resilience, and survival. It’s…overwhelming.”

McCrea nodded, tossing a small stick into the fire. “At least they found this place and have pulled together for protection. They’ve become a community of sorts. You have folks like that nurse and Ty who are using their skills to help the group. I’m sure there are many others as well.”

Kristen stared into the fire, her mind filled with the stories they’d heard, the desperation and determination in people’s eyes. She was struggling to survive, just like them. Kristen knew that for every person there with good intentions, there were twice as many more who were takers. These good people were ripe for someone like Lavish or Lucky to come in and control and abuse them—like they had her.

Wrapped in her sleeping bag, Kristen tried to imagine what her children’s lives might look like now. Kathleen’s farm was outside of town. She raised chickens and had a small garden every year, so her kids were probably fed, but would that same blessing be a curse? Would it make their home a target? Of course it would. She knew then that she had to make it to Vinita—She had to protect them. Taking a red hot stick from the fire, Kristen touched it to her neck and then chest, wincing as she permanently erased the gang’s symbol of control over her life.
